MDF works very well as a worktop for a desk, which I covered with furniture linoleum and finished the edges with real wood edging. Of course, the base frame has to be stable enough to prevent the worktop from bending

For using resin MDF certainly doesnt handle water and static weight over long periods of time.

MDF has its place just like everything else. if it wasn’t used or needed then it wouldn’t exist. also there are different varities of mdf such as ultralite, which is lighter than normal mdf and medex, a more moisture resistant mdf. so yeah most people don’t know what they are talking when they say mdf is bad and that you lack skill if you use mdf. Now melamine on the other hand is crap, don’t get me started on how bad this stuff is and what a terrible carpenter or woodworker you are for using this stuff in projects. Lol! just kidding! 🤣Melamine has its place too.

50% glue, 50% water, mix. Brush on to mdf edges. Sand after 15 minutes. Done. However, sometimes you need to do this twice.
Never tried drywall mud, maybe I’ll give it a go next time.

I’ll happily use MDF anywhere but in the bathrooms at home. It’s flatness and smooth surfaces help create great built-in furniture. You are right to point out the dangers of the dust. I won’t cut it without a mask, and I also use dust extraction if I’m cutting it indoors.

I’ve avoided using MDF in our beach hut because the air next to the sea feels cold & dampfor much of the year, and the hut is unused and unheated for weeks or even months on end in the winter. I fear that an unnoticed chip or scratch in the paint could let the moisture in and lead to me having a time-consuming repair or replacement job.

I used MDF as the center core of my tri-laminate workbench top. At the time it was cheaper than plywood. I used a lower grade plywood on the bottom, MDF in the center, and finished plywood on the top. That was many years ago and the top remains flat.
